Our Mission

The guiding force behind the teachings and ministries at Covenant Presbyterian DTC is our understanding of the kingdom of God. According to the teachings of Jesus, the kingdom of God is not the pie-in-the-sky place we go when we die. The kingdom of God exists right here and now. It exists wherever we see the reign of God break through in love and compassion. Our call is to live as citizens of God’s kingdom right here and now, exemplifying God’s love and kindness in all we do. This understanding drives both the ministries of our church and our personal interactions in the world. You will walk out of church every Sunday, motivated to make a difference in the lives of those you encounter. You will see the influence of God’s kingdom in our many ministries that care for others in tangible ways: our weekly food pantry, our rental assistance ministry, the clean water systems we install in Guatemalan villages, and the essentials we provide to the homeless in Denver.

Covenant's Story

The idea for this church began in 1964 when the Presbytery of Denver purchased 10 acres of land in the Denver Tech Center area on South Yosemite Street.  The first worship service was held at Cherry Creek High School in 1972, and Presbyterian Church of the Covenant officially became a church in the PC(USA) in 1973.

The name “Covenant” is a word from Scripture which refers to the committed relationship God offers to God’s people.  God’s steadfast love for the people of God is demonstrated in story after story in Scripture.  We at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant recognize God’s steadfast love as an amazing gift and as the main thing we base our self understanding on, so that we might love others as we first have been loved.  The star of David is a symbol of this covenant relationship in the Old Testament, and because of that, we have incorporated it into our cross as a reminder to us of who we are.  It is in our stainglass window in the sanctuary and is part of the church logo.

What We Believe

A Glimpse at History | Covenant is a member of the Presbyterian Church USA. Our theological roots go all the way back to the Reformation when the protestants broke away from the Catholic church. Our essential tenets were formed to re-create the church and correct the mistakes of the past.

Non-hierarchical structure | Presbyterians emphasize the “priesthood of all believers.” There are no priests who have authority over us. We are all equal in the eyes of God, with equal access to God. Our leaders (elders) are elected by the congregation and share decision-making with the pastor.

You Have a Right to Your Beliefs | We believe that “God alone is the lord of the conscience.” God has given you the gift of judgment and the freedom to use it. Presbyterians do not see the world as black and white with easy right or wrong solutions. We know that life is messy but that God is in the mess with us. The church exists to gather God’s people for worship, encouragement, and service to others as we seek our future together.

The Centrality of Christ and the Scriptures | Our foundation is Jesus Christ and our bearing comes from the Bible, which we view as the inspired Word of God. The reading and preaching of the Word is the focus of our worship. We believe that all scripture must be interpreted within its historical context and thoughtfully applied to life today.

We Are All Connected | Presbyterian Churches do not operate in isolation. We are all connected to each other and share common ministries. Pastors and ruling elders gather regularly for support and the common work of the regional and national church.
